Microbiologist (Food)

We are seeking a Microbiologist to support high-priority food testing initiatives related to H5N1 (bird flu) within a state-of-the-art public health laboratory. This role is based on a large, modern campus and supports critical public health efforts in collaboration with a leading government health organization.
Contra Costa County, CA (Onsite)
Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM
$38–$48/hr (flexible)
Contract through end of June (potential extension)
Key Responsibilities
- Process incoming food samples (including milk) and enter/track data accurately
- Perform routine laboratory testing in a regulated environment
- Conduct ddPCR and RT-PCR testing on samples
- Perform whole genome sequencing (WGS) and support viral analysis
- Record, analyze, and communicate test results to internal teams
- Maintain laboratory equipment including calibration, troubleshooting, and preventative maintenance
- Support lab operations including sample prep, autoclaving, equipment setup, and cleaning
- Maintain accurate documentation and quality records in compliance with SOPs
- Monitor inventory and assist with ordering lab supplies
- Ensure lab cleanliness, organization, and adherence to safety and quality standards
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Microbiology, or related field
- 1+ years of experience in a food testing or microbiology lab
- Hands-on experience with ddPCR or RT-PCR
- Experience with whole genome sequencing
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-throughput environment
- Strong attention to detail and documentation accuracy
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills
